Coronavirus: Hong Kong’s only public golf course shuts for two weeks after infected customer visits

  • Kau Sai Chau Golf Course contacted on Saturday by Centre for Health Protection concerning customer, who visited on January 14
  • ‘The next two weeks have been identified as critical in terms of containing the disease,’ statement says
The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course has announced it will be closed for the next two weeks after a customer who visited the island last month was confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus.

The Sai Kung-based course said in a statement it was contacted by the Centre for Health Protection on Saturday concerning the customer, who visited the course on January 14.

The patient’s date of laboratory confirmation of the coronavirus was February 4.

“The government has also advised that the next two weeks have been identified as critical in terms of containing the disease and preventing a community outbreak,” the statement continued.

“We are committed to ensuring that the Golf Course is a place where both customers and staff feel safe and enjoy the game of golf.

“With these latest developments and with the consideration for the safety of both customers and staff alike, the Golf Course has made the decision to temporarily close the facilities for two weeks from Saturday February 8 to Friday February 21.

“Management deeply regrets the inconvenience this will cause and wishes to thank all customers for their understanding on the need for this precaution.”

The coronavirus has killed 722 people in China as of Friday, the National Health Commission reported on Saturday, with a total number of confirmed cases in the country rising to 34,546.

There are 26 confirmed cases in Hong Kong, with one death.
