USA’s Xander Schauffele completed an impressive victory after holding the lead for three days to secure Tokyo 2020 gold for his nation at the Kasumigaseki Country Club on Sunday.

Schauffele finished on 18-under-par to clinch gold by one shot. Rory Sabbatini, representing Slovakia, notched the round of the week on Sunday – an incredible 61 that included 10 birdies and an eagle – to make a late charge for the podium top on the last day, but Schauffele, the world No 5, held on for the win.

Seven players, including Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey and Colin Morikawa were involved in a play-off for the bronze medal, but it was Taiwan’s C T Pan who prevailed after four play-off holes, narrowly pipping Morikawa to the last spot on the podium.
