All eyes may be on Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson at this week’s World City Championship, but Wade Ormsby could well be the man to watch at Hong Kong Golf Club.

The Australian has won twice in his three previous visits to the city, claiming the Hong Kong Open in 2017 and 2020, and with a triumph at the International Series Thailand already under his belt this season has plenty of reason to be confident about his chances.

Several days on the sidelines at the LIV Golf event in Tuscon last week, where he was an unused reserve, has done little to dampen the feeling that his game at the moment is more than a match for anyone.

And if anything, the opportunity to savour his Asian Tour play-off win at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin has left him “still on a bit of a high”.

“I think if I play somewhere near my best golf I know I’m going to be around the front here, and even probably a step down from my best golf I think I can, just because the golf course sets up so nicely and I just see all the shots around here,” he said. “I’ve played here a lot and I’ve played well.”

Like Poulter, who won in 2010 at the course in Fanling when he posted a round of 60, Ormsby has a special affinity for the venue he feels “suits his game” better than any other “in Asia, probably the world”.
