Jung Chan-min came within a two shots of breaking the 22-year-old course record at Namseoul Country Club in the GS Caltex Maekyung Open on Thursday, after posting an opening round eight-under-par 63.

The eye-catching performance gave the 23-year-old an early lead in the Asian Tour’s first visit of the year to Korea, and was just two shy of the record set by Taiwan’s Chung Chun-hsing in 2001.

Moon Kyong-jun, who won the tournament in 2015, ended the day in second after a 65, while Argentina’s Miguel Carballo also made relatively light work of the course with a 66.

Defending champion Bio Kim was in a group of seven players tied for fourth a shot further back.

But Hong Kong’s Taichi Kho struggled, carding a one-over 72 in a round that included a double-bogey at the par-5 14th.
