The Asian Tour makes a low-key return at the Mandiri Indonesia Open this week, and for Matthew Cheung it feels like his season is just beginning.

It has been almost four months since the Hongkonger finished in a three-way tie for 10th in the International Series Vietnam, and although there were tournaments in Korea in May and June, the Tour rookie’s status did not earn him entry.

Now though, he is on the verge of a busy stretch that includes Series stops in England and Scotland this month, Singapore in October, as well as representing his city at the Asian Games in September alongside Taichi Kho, who is also playing in Thursday’s first round at Pondok Indah Golf Course.

While the Tour took its break, many of the players did not, with the Open Championship, LIV Golf and other events keeping them busy. For Cheung, the past couple of months have involved some time on the Asian Development Tour in Thailand, as well as other smaller tournaments.

“I’ve been keeping busy, playing about twice every month, and the competition in Thailand is still pretty tough, so it’s good proving grounds,” he said. “You’ve got to play well just to make the cut, and the cuts I had were three or four under.”

Cheung’s last ADT event before taking a short trip to visit family in the US was at the Singha Pattaya Open in July, where he finished in a tie for sixth after starting the day in the final group, one shot off the lead.
