Lee’s six-under-par 65 in the third round took him to 22 under overall, while Poom kept pace with a 64. Jae-woong Eom remained in touch with the leaders at 18 under, largely thanks to a stunning eagle at the par-5 18th.

The South Korean chipped in from 25ft, to match Lee’s score at Macau Golf and Country Club.

Poom, who is in a rich vein of form after winning in Taiwan three weeks ago and finishing third in Singapore last week, said Lee was all but uncatchable.

“I think I have to hit nine under tomorrow to stop Lee,” Poom said. “If he plays like he is playing now, it will be difficult, even though I am only two shots behind. We’ll see.”

Lee is chasing his first win in two years and first on the Asian Tour, and alongside his eagle, five birdies and second bogey of the week, a par save at the par-3 11th may yet prove to be the most crucial.
