Wishes coming true

For 27-year-old Rebecca Marriott, life has taken a big turn-around in a year. Twelve months ago on a typically grey, wet English day she was tucked up on the couch in Southend, Essex, watching the Sevens.

"My boyfriend, Will Spence [28] is a really big rugby fan, and that day I remember we were both saying how much we really wanted to experience a Sevens in Hong Kong. It looked like massive fun."

Although they say "be careful what you wish for", their dream became a case of wishful thinking; within a few months, they were being transferred to Hong Kong for work. For months, they have been excited about their first Sevens, and are making a good fist of getting right into the South Stand spirit.

"We were so lucky that we got tickets in the ballot. Friends have flown in from Essex, and Dubai. Some of us have been to the London Sevens, and another to the Dubai Sevens, but Hong Kong is the sevens piece de resistance."

In typical Hong Kong fashion, their network of friends has quickly grown, through work and rugby. There are 15 of them in their squad. "Will has recently joined the Leighton Asia HKCC team, playing second row and in the past month has played three cup games for the club."

The squad has been through various wardrobe wishes … A Rubik's cube, zebras from Madagascar, Lions from The Lion King, Candy Crush bits of candy, but settled on Cool Runnings for the guys and Shower Puffs for the girls.
