Siobhan Haughey was left bitterly disappointed last night after she came agonisingly close to winning a rare individual medal for Hong Kong in the pool, finishing fourth in the women's 100 metres freestyle.

One day after anchoring Hong Kong to a bronze medal in the women's 4x100 metres freestyle relay at the Asian Games, Haughey returned to the pool in the hope that she could win on her own.

But the St Paul's Secondary School student, 16, did not have enough gas in the tank as she finished with a below-par time of 54.94 seconds at the Munhak Park Tae-hwan Aquatics Centre.

China's Shen Duo won the gold in 54.37, ahead of teammate Tang Yi, 54.45, while Japan's Miki Uchida grabbed the bronze in 54.66.

"I'm not happy at all with my result," said a crushed Haughey. "It was not what I expected."

If Haughey had been able to replicate the time with which she won the gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Dubai in August last year, she would have got a bronze.
