At the age of 50, Angela Leung Fung-ming encouraged her teenage son to take up more exercise by jogging with him - the theory being he would be more likely to stick with it if he had someone to run with.

Fast forward to this month's Chicago Marathon and the now 56-year-old doctor is clutching a certificate as the winner of the women's veteran 55 age group. The trophy will come in the post.

Leung, who was competing in only her sixth marathon, achieved this feat after taking up running just six years ago.

On days when I'm feeling fresh, I'll run fast. On days when I'm tired and I just want to relax, that's OK too

"My son was putting on weight, so I suggested he should take up running, and to encourage him further I offered to run with him," said Leung. "It was all a bit haphazard, mostly 6km to 8km runs on Bowen Road. However, the more I ran the more I enjoyed it and so I decided I needed to take some lessons."

Leung took a short four-week course organised by "10k Runners", which is where she met Sunny Chau Kwai-sun, who became her coach.

"Sunny agrees with my philosophy that I simply want to enjoy myself and lead a healthy lifestyle," she said. "He doesn't push me with objectives and allows me to run how I feel within an overall programme.
