Kitchee joined South China in qualifying for the AFC Cup quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over Persib Bandung in Indonesia on Wednesday. Two goals in the first half through marksman Juan Belencoso and midfield powerhouse Lam Ka-wai settled the round-of-16, one-off match at Jalak Harupat Soreang Stadium. I am very happy to walk away with such an important win in my last match with Kitchee Outgoing Kitchee coach Jose Molina Belencoso, who recently extended his contract with Kitchee for another two seasons, drew first blood with a powerful header after an excellent cross from left back Cheung Kin-fung on 30 minutes. The Spaniard was later named man of the match. The second goal came from a set piece, with Lam pouncing to drill in low from 20 yards after Xu Deshuai's direct free kick hit the wall just before half-time. Coach Jose Molina had mixed feelings after his last game in charge of Kitchee. "I feel sorry to leave such a good team," said the former Spain international. "We pressed hard in the first half and our effort paid off. "We held back a bit after the break as we were two goals up and the intimidating atmosphere also made our life very difficult. "I am very happy to walk away with such an important win in my last match with Kitchee." Captain Lo Kwan-yee said his team were the better side. "The temperature was not too hot and humid and we were not disadvantaged," he said. "We were able to use the ball well and took the opportunities to lead by two goals. They tried to come back in the second half and put us under a lot of pressure, but we were well prepared and hung in there till the end. "The result gives us a lot of confidence to go one better than last year and reach the final." After South China's home victory over Bengaluru of India on Tuesday night, it is the first time two teams from Hong Kong will start in the quarter-finals of the regional cup competition. The quarter-finals will be played over two legs, home and away, with the first leg on August 25 or 26 and the return on September 15 or 16. Clubs from different zones (east or west Asia) can be drawn against each other, but South China and Kitchee cannot meet until the semi-finals. The quarter-finals draw will be made on June 18. Kitchee and South China have reached the semi-finals before - last year and 2009 respectively. On their current performances, they are favoured to get there again. South China have won seven straight to reach the last eight, while Kitchee showed quality in beating Bandung - a tough away match against the Indonesian champions.
