Classy attacking midfielder during the 1980s now in critical condition suffering from cancer

Former Hong Kong soccer captain Wu Kwok-hung, widely considered one of the best-ever local players, was in critical condition on Sunday night, suffering from cancer.

Wu, 66, retired in 1986 when his club, Seiko, were disbanded. An attacking midfielder, Wu led Hong Kong to a famous 2-1 victory over China in a 1985 World Cup qualifier that ended the hopes of the mainland reaching the Mexico World Cup finals the following year.

Extremely skillful and articulate, Wu helped Seiko win more than 40 trophies during his 14-year tenure with Hong Kong’s successful club.

A testimonial match for Wu was held in 1986, which attracted a full house at the then 28,000 seater Hong Kong Stadium, proving his huge popularity with the fans.
