Choi Uen-shan and Lui Hui-lam will be hoping to maintain the city's tradition of success at the Head Hong Kong Junior Squash Open, which starts today at the Cornwall Street Squash and Table Tennis Centre in Kowloon Tong. The 18-year-old Choi, a quarter-finalist at the world junior championships in Eindhoven, is taking part in the women's under-19 division while two-time winner Lui, 14, is aiming for another age group title at U15 level. Lui won the under-11 crown in 2011 and under-13 title two years ago. Choi is hoping for her first title this year after reaching the final of the Malaysian Open in June. Since the event started in 1968, Hong Kong players have won 94 of the 160 titles across various age groups for men and women. The 47th edition of the Head Hong Kong Junior Squash Open features 589 participants, who are set to duke it out across 10 divisions over the next four days. The opening rounds are at Kowloon Tong, while the semis and finals will be held at the Hong Kong Squash Centre in Admiralty from August 15-16. The Hong Kong Squash Open is one of the most prestigious events on the circuit and served as a springboard for Hong Kong's golden girl Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin. Chiu, who turned pro in 1993, put local squash on the map by bagging silvers in the Asian Games in Bangkok 1998 and Doha 2006, as well as gold in Busan 2002. Before that, she dominated the U-19 division of the event from 1992 to 1997 and went on to lead a successful career that saw her placed 13th in the world rankings in 2007.
