Right on cue: Ng On-yee sinks her biggest award as she is named ‘Best of the Best’
Hong Kong’s top women’s snooker player scoops the main prize at glittering Hong Kong Sports Star Awards ceremony in Wan Chai, beating out cyclist Sarah Lee
Hong Kong star cue master Ng On-yee showed humility to match her calmness on the snooker table after she picked up the night’s biggest award at a glittering Hong Kong Sports Star Awards on Monday night.
At the Hong Kong sports “Oscars” at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, the 25-year-old women’s world champion was named “Best of the Best”, beating out last year’s winner, cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze.

“I am very happy to have had a lot people supporting me so that I can overcome hurdle after hurdle to achieve the many good results on the international stage,” said Ng.
“As a player, I enjoy a lot of benefits in training and competitions but this could not have happened without the hard work and contributions of many former snooker players in Hong Kong. I owe them a lot.
“I will be spending a lot more time in England this year and the road ahead will be much more difficult against many top professionals, but I will keep learning to become a better player.”
There were 34 candidates nominated by their respective national sports associations for the award, with eight shortlisted after a ballot comprising voting by the public (20 per cent), media (20 per cent) and a judging panel (60 per cent).
Ng clinched the 2015 WLBSA world championship title in Leeds after defeating England’s Emma Bonney in the final. And she made history in the previous round, ending the reign of 10-time champion Reanne Evans, also from England.
Ng became a double world champion in 2015 as she also captured the IBSF 6 Reds world title in Pakistan.

Table tennis player Wong Chun-ting accepted the honour for the Team Event Award following his bronze medal winning performance with partner Doo Hoi-kem in the mixed doubles at the 2015 World Championships.
The paddler made a special trip back from Kuwait to Hong Kong yesterday to collect the award and returned to the Middle East the same night for the Qatar Open.

Ranked 11th in men’s singles world rankings, Wong played in the Kuwait Open last week.

“Indeed, my first match in Doha won’t start until Friday, while Doo starts her campaign on Wednesday. I am happy to collect it on her behalf.”
The team sport award went to the Hong Kong soccer team for their outstanding performance in the World Cup qualifiers, especially their two draws against China.
And it was the second time the soccer team won the award. They last won it in 2009 after clinching a gold medal at the East Asian Games in front of a home crowd.
