Hong Kong amateur Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching, who is on the cusp of qualifying for the Olympic Games this summer after winning last week’s Hong Kong Ladies Open, got off to a rough start at the Korea Women’s Open Golf Championship on Thursday, carding a 77 in the first round to give herself a mountain to climb if she’s to make the cut.

At No 58 in the Olympic rankings, with the top-60 making the elite field in Rio, the 22-year-old can’t afford too many slip-ups before the qualifying period ends on July 11.

Chan, Asia-Pacific’s highest-ranked amateur at No 14 in the world, carded only one birdie in her five-over-par effort over the demanding Bears Best Cheongna Club in Incheon, leaving her in a share of 81st place in the prestigious 1 billion won (HK$6,620,000) tournament, eight shots off the lead set by South Korean pair Kim Hae-rym and Hye Sun-kim.

Hong Kong national coach Brad Schadewitz, who is caddying for the former Diocesan Girls’ School student this week, said: “It wasn’t a bad round – her approach shots were off a little but it’s a tough course, one where you can’t leave yourself on the wrong side of the hole.

“But her spirits remain high, she has confidence in knowing what she has to do and she’s more than capable of putting in a strong second round.”
