Impressive showing from Hong Kong on debut at World U19 Lacrosse Championships
Hong Kong University students finish third in their group in Canada
Hong Kong’s junior lacrosse team finished third in their group on their debut at the World Under-19 Lacrosse championships in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
The team, comprised mainly of students from Hong Kong University, beat Taiwan (15-1) and Mexico (12-5) but lost to group winners Israel (3-10) and Germany (3-14).
The tournament is split into three divisions with the Blue Division featuring the top teams in the world – USA, Canada, Iroquois Nationals, England and Australia – and the Red and Green Divisions evenly split between the rest.
China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are competing at the event for the first time.
Canada-born Bryan Houghton has been Hong Kong’s star player so far with 12 goals and six assists, with Ko Long-fai notching five goals and five assists.
Hong Kong will face either Mexico or Scotland in their bracket semi-final and can finish as high as ninth in the 14-team tournament.
