Hong Kong’s Angus Ng off to a winning start in badminton, doubles pairings lose

Youngster wins opening match in the men’s singles but Hong Kong’s two doubles teams are beaten by Indonesian opponents

Angus Ng Ka-long won his opening match in the Rio Olympics men’s singles competition but Hong Kong’s two doubles teams were beaten by Indonesian opponents.

Ng scored a 21-11, 21-14 victory over Canada’s Martin Giuffre in his first match in group M, which also features Pedro Martin, of Portugal.

The youngster is one of Hong Kong’s main hopes in the badminton competition and though he is not one of the favourites for a medal, recent victories over China’s Lin Dan and Chen Long will give him confidence.

In the mixed doubles, Hong Kong’s Lee Chun-hei and Chau Hoi-wah were beaten 21-12, 19-21, 21-15 by Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto.

Also in their pool are Germany’s Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels, and the number one seeds from China, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei.

The women’s doubles pair of Tse Yuen-suet and Poon Lok-kan lost 21-9, 21-11 to Nitya Maheswari and Greysia Polii.

The group is completed by Heather Olver and Lauren Smith, of Great Britain, and the Malaysia duo Vivian Hoo Kah Mu and Woon Khe Wei.
