Unfortunately, damage done earlier in the week in the 12-race qualifying series meant he was never in contention for a medal – indeed, gold and silver had been sewn up before the medal race even began – but he did improve his position to eighth overall.

“His coach Yu Wing-ho and I are happy with Michael’s performance as it is difficult for all sailors to perform well under stress, especially in the medal race,” said coach Chan Ying-kin.
“With his performance of today, I would say he did excellent throughout the Olympics.
“He did an incredible job in dealing with stress, excellent board speed and always stayed focus with a strong and positive mind.”
Gold medallist Dorian van Russelberghe of the Netherlands continued his domination of the series with the win.
Cheng knocked silver medallist Nick Dempsey of Great Britain into fourth in the medal race, but he might have been feeling the effects of his celebrations, having already clinched the overall win two days previously.
