Hong Kong show jumper Patrick Lam triumphs in China League to qualify for FEI World Cup
The Jockey Club-sponsored rider won the final leg of the league in Beijing to finish top of the table after four rounds and gain entry to the top level for the first time
Hong Kong show jumper Patrick Lam Lap-shun qualified for next year’s FEI World Cup after clinching the China League overall championship on Friday.
The Jockey Club-sponsored rider won the final leg of the league in Beijing to finish top of the table after four legs and gain entry to the World Cup for the first time.
The Beijing leg featured 1.5-metre fences and attracted more than 20 top riders from Germany, Britain, Switzerland, China and Hong Kong.
Lam achieved a clear round in the jump-off to secure first place. Clarissa Crotta of Switzerland was second followed by Zhao Zhiwen of China. Another Hong Kong rider, Kenneth Cheng, came 16th.
Lam is the second rider from Hong Kong to have qualified for the World Cup after Raena Leung did so for the 2013 worlds. The 2017 World Cup will take place in Omaha in the United States from March 27 to April 2.
“The club’s steadfast support has enabled me to receive the best training which has enhanced my skills,” said Lam. “I was also given the opportunity to compete with top riders in Europe which certainly enriched my experience.”
