Another solid start for Tiffany Chan in Michigan as Olympian cards two-under-par first round

The 23-year-old sits tied for 12th after opening round of the Symetra Tour’s Island Resort Championship in Harris

Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching’s solid start to life as a professional golfer in the US continued with an opening round of two under par at the Symetra Tour’s Island Resort Championship in Michigan.
Olympian Chan, fresh from a second-place finish in just her second professional event a week earlier, spread five birdies and three bogey across her card at the 6,286-yard Sweetgrass Golf Club for a first round of 70 and a share of 12th place.

Having rocketed up the final-round leaderboard last week in Illinois with a nine-under-par 63 for a stunning debut on the second-tier Symetra Tour, the 23-year-old continued that form in Harris township, Michigan, with two birdies in her first three holes.

She reached the turn in two under par after responding to her first bogey of the week with a third birdie of the round on the ninth green.

Chan moved further up the leaderboard with two further gains over the first five holes of the back nine, but two bogeys in four holes to finish – including a six at the par-five 18th – left Chan five shots off the pace.

The University of Southern California graduate opened with rounds of 70 and 72 last week at the Decatur-Forsyth Classic.

China’s Liu Ruixin leads the way on seven under par, with American Emma Talley a shot further off the pace.
