Hong Kong hurdler Lui Lai-yiu set to cook up a storm at Asian Athletics Championships in India

Aiming for a solid performance, she will take no chances with her diet and plans to take a mini rice cooker with her to the regional event

Hong Kong’s Lui Lai-yiu plans to bring a mini rice cooker when she competes in the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, India, next month.

After winning the women’s 100 metres hurdles in the Inter-City Championships at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground yesterday, she said she would cook her own food in India.

“I have heard there are problems adapting to the drinking water there and therefore I have to make some preparations,” said Lui, who clocked 13.84 seconds despite the windy conditions.

“Considering the terrible wind conditions at Tseung Kwan O, this is not a bad result.”

Lui has a personal best of 13.56 seconds for the 100m hurdles.

In the men’s 4x100 metres relay, the Hong Kong team of Wan Hin-chung, Ng Ka-fung, Tang Yik-chun and Tsui Chi-ho had no problem winning in 39.77 seconds but the time was a long way away from the Hong Kong record of 38.47 seconds.

“We need to finish somewhere near 39 seconds if we are to challenge for a top-three position at the Asian Championships,” said Ng, who will attempt to break the Hong Kong record of 10.28 seconds in the 100 metres after setting a personal best of 10.31 this year.
