Defeat for Hong Kong in women’s lacrosse World Cup opener

Travis Taylor’s side lose a tight contest 12-10 to Italy at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Thursday

Carrie Lam Ka-wai scored four goals as Hong Kong began their Women’s Lacrosse World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 12-10 defeat by Italy in England on Thursday.

Travis Taylor’s side, who are looking to improve on their 18th-placed finish in Canada four years ago, led 4-3 midway through the first half at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford before Italy fought back to lead 8-6 at the break.

The contest remained tight into the second half, but three consecutive goals for Italy proved key despite Hong Kong finishing strongly with a trio of unanswered strikes of their own inside the final 15 minutes.

“It was our first game and I think we came out with some nerves and we lost the first half,” said Hong Kong coach Taylor.

“In the second half we rebounded and came out with a 4-4 tie in the second half.

“Slightly disappointing first game, but we know we need to get better if we are to improve our place from last time.”

Hong Kong continue their campaign against seventh-ranked indigenous Canadian nation Haudenosaunee, who began their campaign with a 17-5 win over South Korea, on Friday.
