Hong Kong claim first win at women’s lacrosse World Cup to set up South Korea showdown

Katherine Barker, Alexandra Tsai, Katherine Mok and Carrie Lam Ka-wai on target at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Sunday as Travis Taylor’s side post 7-3 victory

Katherine Barker scored three goals as Hong Kong claimed their first win at the women’s lacrosse World Cup after recording a 7-3 victory over Switzerland on Sunday in England.

Alexandra Tsai scored twice, while Katherine Mok and Carrie Lam Ka-wai were also on target at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, as Travis Taylor’s side bounced back from opening defeats by Italy and Canadian nation Haudenosaunee in pool B.

Hong Kong goalkeeper Liu Hiu Tan claimed the player of the match award to give Taylor’s side the chance to earn a place in the second-tier platinum bracket with a victory over South Korea on Monday.

Hong Kong, who finished 18th out of 19 teams at the 2013 World Cup in Canada after recording two wins over Sweden, lost 14-9 to South Korea at the Asia-Pacific Championship last month.

South Korea have also won one and lost two of their opening three games after losing 17-5 to Haudenosaunee and 11-10 to Italy either side of a 10-3 win over Switzerland.
