Hong Kong scores first medal at 2017 World Games as tenpin bowling pair claim bronze in Poland

City captures first medal at this years Games as Wu Siu-hong and Michael Mak Cheuk-yin beat Mexico in third place play-off

Hong Kong captured their first medal at the World Games after tenpin bowling duo Wu Siu-hong and Michael Mak Cheuk-yin took a bronze in the men’s doubles in Wroclaw, Poland.

The Hong Kong pair defeated Mexican bowlers Ricardo Lecuona and Arturo Quintero 1003-948 in the third place play-off after losing to a Canadian pair in the semi-finals.

“The draw was not easy as they first met a United States professional team in the last eight before taking on the Canadians,” said tenpin bowling chairwoman Vivien Lau Chiang-chu. “They did their best to overcome the two US players but the semi-finals proved too difficult for them. Fortunately they were not discouraged and picked up their form again in the bronze medal match.”

Wu and Mak produced their best performance in the 972-958 narrow win over Americans Marshall Kent and Tommy Jones but were no match for Francois Lavoie and Dan Maclelland in their 1059-911 defeat in the semi-finals. Lavoie was the 2016 US Open singles champion.

It was the second tenpin bowling medal for Hong Kong at the World Games, an international multi-sport event meant for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games, after Wu’s silver in the singles at the 2009 Games in Taiwan.
