Hong Kong swimmer still struggling with injury ahead of biggest meets of US college season
Hong Kong Olympic swimming star Siobhan Haughey is a doubt for her University of Michigan team’s Big Ten Championships later this month after missing their meet with Michigan State last weekend.
Haughey has struggled with injury recently, pulling out of the team’s meet with Indiana in mid-January before returning to the pool at the Wolverines’ contest with Ohio State, Virginia Tech and Rutgers on January 20.
The Wolverines coped without Haughey at Canham Natatorium, using home pool advantage to beat their state rivals and finish the season 10-0, their first undefeated season in two decades.
The team goes into the Big Ten Championships later this month looking for a third consecutive title.
Last year Haughey was the star in the 200-yard freestyle, where she set school, division and championship records with a 1:42:49.
While the team may cope without Haughey at the divisional championships, they will need their star swimmer back for the NCAA Championships in March.
The school newspaper, The Michigan Daily, reported that coach Mike Bottom was non-commital regarding Haughey’s availability for both championships when interviewed after her most recent competitive swim.
Haughey represented Hong Kong at the Rio Games in 2016 and reached a debut World Championships final in the 200m freestyle last year, where she finished fifth.
