Asian Games: Hong Kong home affairs chief Lau Kong-wah inspired by women’s relay bronze medal
The government official spent five days in Jakarta and was impressed by the spectacular opening ceremony on Saturday
Lau, the secretary for home affairs, was present for three Hong Kong medals during his five-day stay in Jakarta – one swimming and two fencing – and said he was also spellbound by dazzling opening ceremony at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Saturday.
He was impressed with Hong Kong athletes’ efforts in winning one silver and four bronze medals as of Monday night, and said the relay team provided an excellent platform for success.
“After that performance by the swimming team it really encouraged the spirit of the other teams so there is a very good atmosphere and high morale among the Hong Kong delegation,” he said.
The government is paying particular attention to Hong Kong’s performances at these Games because of the recent policy address that encouraged more support for sports, particularly team sports.
Lau also praised Indonesia for its organisation of the Games.
“This is the second time for Indonesia to arrange the Asian Games and everything is very smooth, the traffic is OK, so I must congratulate Indonesia for a very good Games.
“The opening ceremony was so attractive. We have a very good impression, especially how they put all the athletes in front of the stage after they had entered the stadium,” he said.
“This shows the respect of the organisers towards the athletes because on some occasions the athletes have to stand for one or two hours. But here they could sit down in front of us and watch the show. It is very symbolic.”
In addition to swimming and fencing, Lau watched Hong Kong in action at water polo and softball, which Hong Kong have entered for the first time, and he also visited the archery team.
Hong Kong government officials will continue to be represented throughout the Asian Games to promote and encourage cultural exchanges with Indonesia.
