Tsun Dai to play for China? Plot thickens as hot prospect refuses to commit allegiance to Hong Kong
Oxford United forward tells Chinese reporter the question of his allegiance is too sensitive to discuss
In an interview with Chinese media at the camp in Amsterdam, Dai responded carefully when asked if he would commit to representing China once he obtains a Chinese passport.
“[The situation] is too sensitive at the moment, and Hong Kong people are already not happy with me.”
Some Hong Kong fans have accused Dai of betraying the city to play for China.
Born in Hong Kong, Dai was called up to new manager Gary White’s senior squad for the first time this month as part of a 33-member preliminary group in preparation for two international friendlies against Thailand and Indonesia.
However, it was discovered this week that after departing Hong Kong, Dai joined up with the Chinese squad for their training camp led by legendary Dutch coach Guus Hiddink.
In the interview, Dai said he was still not at his best due to the injury and that Hiddink was a coach that could bring something positive to the Chinese side.
“He is full of knowledge,” Dai said. “A good coach with good experience. He is bringing a lot of quality into the team.”
