Retired athlete Fay Ho Kim-fai is coming back for a second time to challenge the establishment at Tuesday’s annual general meeting of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong.

Ho, who represented Hong Kong in canoeing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and in rowing at the 1992 Barcelona Games, is seeking election as one of the four candidates running for the post of deputy honorary general secretary.

“An organisation always needs a new face to bring in new ideas and thinking,” said Ho, now a director at the Rowing Association in charge of next year’s World Coastal Rowing Championships in Hong Kong. “As a former athlete, I also want to see more female representation in the governing body of Hong Kong sports as this is becoming a world trend.”

Ho, however, would not predict the outcome but would like to see more member associations cast their vote to help Hong Kong sports.

The three incumbents of the post, Leung Mee-lee, Edgar Yang Joe-tsi and Wong Po-kee are all running for another two-year term. It’s believed Leung, a retired professor at Baptist University, and Ho will be competing for the post.

Four years ago, Ho went up for election as one of eight vice presidents of the Olympic Committee but was defeated. She thinks she has a better chance this time around.

The eight vice presidents are all running for another term while there is no one challenging the president, Timothy Fok Tsun-ting.
