Beijing to host women’s world snooker championship: Hong Kong’s defending champion Ng On-yee expects more pressure
- World No 1 and three-time winner says there is greater expectation on her by playing closer to home
Hong Kong’s Ng On-yee said she was confident of coping with the extra pressure of defending her world title closer to home, with the 2019 women’s world championship set to be held in Beijing.
Governing body Women’s World Snooker announced on Wednesday that the March 20-23 tournament has been moved from the Dubai World Trade Centre to the CBSA-WPBSA Academy in Beijing, China.
World number one Ng said she was excited at the prospect of defending her title in the Chinese capital but was wary of the expectations as well as the growing number of talented young Asians coming through the ranks.
“I have noticed some new talent competing in both junior and ladies events from countries like China, Korea and Thailand lately,” Ng told the South China Morning Post. “Hopefully having another major event in Asia will attract even more new faces to the game.
“I am happy to see more opportunities and awareness for ladies in snooker, but it also means I will need to work harder to improve my game as I seek to win more titles.
“Events like the WSF Ladies World Championship and the Hong Kong Masters in 2017 can definitely bring the interest of Asian snooker fans to the next level.
