From polo novices to mentors in 10 months: Hong Kong graduates ready to groom next generation of riders
- The inaugural Beginners Cup has changed the lives of those who learned to ride and play from scratch as they pass on their knowledge to a new batch
Most of them had never been on a horse before. One year later, they are ready to help groom the next generation of Hong Kong polo players.
Players from the first Hong Kong Beginners Polo Cup are no longer rookies after going through a rigorous 10-month training programme that included monthly trips to Thailand or Tianjin, China, where the tournament took place in October.
Their escapades have inspired more Hongkongers to take up the sport and chief organiser Andrew Leung is gearing up for the next round in his quest to increase the popularity of polo in Hong Kong.
“The Hong Kong Beginners Polo Cup was an absolute success,” said Leung, who learned the game in England and returned to the saddle four years ago after a two-decade absence.
“All of the Beginners had the time of their lives and most importantly there were no injuries sustained by horse or rider. I sense that an unshakeable bond of respect and friendship has been forged between all of the participants involved, as we all trained together in preparation for the event for one whole year.
