Opinion | Kenneth To was so happy to go to the US to train. Little did I know I’d never see him again
- Post reporter Chan Kin-wa remembers his last meeting with the swimmer, who soon left for training camp in Florida
- The 26-year-old, who died during the trip, thought his own Cantonese was lousy but he’s a Hong Kong hero
I bumped into Kenneth To King-him in the lobby of the Hong Kong Sports Institute last December after finishing an interview. We knew each other and chatted for a while.
He was so happy to tell me he would be going to the United States the following week for a three-month training camp in Florida where some top US swimmers, including Ryan Lochte, had trained before.
I wondered if I should write a story about his trip, as the record-breaking Hong Kong swimmer would be rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the world.
I wished To good luck and left. Little did I know it would be the last time I ever saw him.
The first time I saw him was at the 2015 short course World Cup series in Hong Kong. It was a three-day event beginning on a Friday at Victoria Park Swimming Pool in September.
