I can match the world’s best in two years’ time, says figure skater Christy Leung Yi after Saitama sensation
- The 16-year-old, who trains in the US, dominates senior category at Hong Kong championships
- She finished a creditable 14th at the recent world championships in Saitama, Japan

Fans of figure skater Christy Leung Yi caught another glimpse of the Hong Kong star in action before she is likely to take on a much bigger stage in three years’ time at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The 16-year-old US based skater is well on her way to Beijing judging by her recent performance at the world championships held in Saitama, Japan, where the city’s top talent finished a creditable 14th against some of the planet’s biggest names.
She only has to maintain her form up until the 2021 world championships to guarantee her place in history and become the first Hong Kong figure skater to qualify for the Olympics. The Worlds are held every year.
“The top 24 skaters at the 2021 World Championships [in Stockholm] will be eligible for the Beijing Winter Games. My performance in Saitama has boosted my confidence,” said the teenager, who returned to Hong Kong this week for the annual Hong Kong championships.
