Pui Kwan-kay poised to succeed outgoing Brian Leung as Hong Kong Football Association chairman
- HKFA will hold election next month but Pui Kwan-kay is not expected to have any challengers
- Pui can help retain crucial HK$25 million government subvention that ends next year
The Hong Kong Football Association has opted for stability and continuity with Pui Kwan-kay poised to become chairman ahead of the government’s expected decision to renew funding.
The HKFA will hold a general election next month and Pui, who is already vice-chairman with decades of involvement in local football, is favoured to take over from the outgoing Brian Leung Hung-tak.
Businessman Leung was first elected chairman in 2007 but has to step down after two four-year terms under the government’s “Project Phoenix” initiative, which was renamed the “Five Year Strategic Plan” in 2015.
The plan provides the HKFA with HK$25 million (US$1.9 million) per annum, with the same amount of financial support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Leung has previously said that without the HK$50 million a year, the association could not survive.
