Ng On-yee leads record seven-strong Hong Kong assault on Bangkok for inaugural snooker World Cup and World Championship
- Having the tournament in Asia means it is cheaper to send a bigger women’s team to compete in the tournament
- Defending world champion Ng is seeking her fourth world title and will partner Ho Yee-ki in the team World Cup
No jet-lag, no long journey and no lack of confidence – snooker chiefs are hoping these factors and the presence of defending champion Ng On-yee will help Hong Kong dominate the inaugural women’s World Cup and World Championship next week in Bangkok.
Hong Kong is sending a record seven players to the Thai capital – almost 13 per cent of the 54 entries – as Ng vies for her fourth world title in what appears to be the strongest women’s field ever assembled from June 20-23.
“This year, we have decided to send more players than usual to the World Championship event,” said Hong Kong coach Wayne Griffiths. “This was partly to make the most efficient use of funding because the event is held in Asia, but more importantly it was to give additional players the taste of the major competition experience they need.
“It seemed too good a chance to miss. We are all aware that On-yee has been a formidable performer for Hong Kong for many years. However, it should not be forgotten that every player attending this event under the Hong Kong flag has achieved results at world-class level also.
“They are all elite level performers at the [Hong Kong Sports Institute] and they will all have exacting targets to meet for this event.
