FINA World Championships: Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey finishes second in first heat of 200m freestyle, advancing to semi-finals

Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey cruised to second place in her first heat at the 2019 FINA World Championships. The 21-year-old clocked in during the 200m freestyle at 1:56.02, behind Sweden’s Sarah Sjoestroem, who won the heat with a time of 1:55.14.
Haughey was swimming in lane three with an open spot beside her in lane four. She also came second overall in the heats (there were seven in total) and will compete in the semi-final tonight in Gwangju, South Korea, which will start at 8.14pm (Hong Kong time).
One of the top swimmers in the world, American Katie Ledecky, withdrew from the 200m because of illness. She released a statement via the US team director noting it was purely on “medical grounds”.

Haughey will also compete in the 100m freestyle on Thursday morning which features 10 preliminary heats.

Haughey is seen as one of Hong Kong’s medal hopes next year for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo when it comes to the 200m freestyle.
