Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) rider Thomas Ho was just a late-teen when Hong Kong’s equestrian team snagged a wildcard to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Now, the 30-year-old is all-but-officially confirmed to qualify for Tokyo 2020 – a dream 12 years in the making.
“You could say Beijing 2008 kind of inspired me to [try for] an Olympics,” Ho said upon returning from a very successful team outing at the inaugural FEI Asian Championships in Thailand last week. “I saw Patrick Lam do it, I saw Kenneth [Cheng] do it, and it drove me more to push myself to get to one some time in my life.”

Hong Kong-born Ho did not initially think Olympic qualification was within reach, but point-worthy performances in his eventing discipline in Belgium and Poland have propelled him to the top of the rankings.

Having already secured his minimum eligibility requirement scores, Ho is likely to earn one of two remaining individual spots. It is now a case of waiting for the International Federation of Equestrian Sports’ (FEI) qualification period to close on December 31 and send out official confirmation next year. Fellow Asian nations Thailand and China qualified through competitions last month.

“I can't believe it's happened, honestly. When I started the year I didn't think it was possible but my horse just kept getting better and better throughout the year,” said Ho, who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games.
