Maximum 147 break for Hong Kong’s Steven Chau as coach Wayne Griffiths hails rise of young local talent
- It was the former world six reds finalist’s first career maximum and took place during a practice match at the East Asia Snooker Club in Kowloon
- Griffiths says youngsters such as former under-18 world champion Cheung Ka-wai and Chang Yu-kiu are the future for Hong Kong

Hong Kong snooker player Steven Chau Hon-man says he still has what it takes to become a world-class player after compiling a career-first maximum break of 147.
The 32-year-old has been trying to build on his appearance in the final of the 2016 IBSF World Six Reds Championships in Egypt but has struggled to make an impact in subsequent tournaments and in snooker’s main qualifying school events.
He hopes his first 147 during practice on Thursday at the East Asia Snooker Club in Kowloon City will boost his confidence.
“I still hope to be among the best players in the world,” said Hong Kong Sports Institute athlete Chau, who lost 6-4 to Briton Darren Morgan in the 2016 six reds final. “There are still a number of goals I want to achieve and I am confident I can fulfil those ambitions.

“I also want to be a role model for younger players. Hong Kong people know about snooker and I want to help make the sport even more popular and encourage more people to play.
“I wasn’t expecting a maximum at the start but after a while I was in a good position to go for the black each time.”
