The international future of Dai Wai-tsun, better known as “Tsun Dai”, seems to be settled after the midfielder clearly indicated he would like to represent China, and not Hong Kong where he was born.

Last week, Hong Kong team manager Mixu Paatelainen said he was closely monitoring the player and would like to call up Dai, who spent his youth career in England, for national duty as the Finn is preparing for the remaining 2022 World Cup Asian zone qualifiers slated for 2021.

But apparently, the 21-year-old Dai has made his choice.

After scoring his first goal for Shenzhen against Guangzhou R&F in a Guangdong derby over the weekend, Dai said his future choice would be China and not Hong Kong.

In an interview with Guangzhou media the day after the 2-0 victory, Dai said he wanted to represent China at senior level.

“I surely want to play for China,” said Dai, who has played for Hong Kong in a number of youth tournaments. “But I won’t say I can represent China after playing only two good games. It’s still too early to say anything. My priority at the moment is to do a good job for my team.”
