ISL: Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey sets another Asian record in Budapest

  • Swimmer beats her own Asian best in winning the 200m freestyle, moves to seventh fastest in history
  • Star finishes with three Hong Kong records in first match of International Swimming League season and Energy Standard debut

Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey impressed in day two of the first match of the International Swimming League in Budapest on Saturday setting another Asian record.

The 22-year-old built on Friday’s success at the Duna Arena, where she set an Asian record with her 100m split in the freestyle relay, with a win and another Asian record in the 200m free.

This was also her third Hong Kong national record of the match.

Haughey finished in 1:51.67, ahead of the 2012 London Olympic champion Allison Schmitt, to take 15 points for her Energy Standard team. This bested her own Asian record of 1:51.99, which she set in the ISL finals last year and moves her to seventh all time.

She followed this up with helping the team to a one-two finish in the 100m free, finishing just behind teammate Sarah Sjostrom, who owns the 200m world record.

In her final race of the day, Haughey was part of the mixed 4x100m free relay team that won in a time of 3:16.22.

Reigning champions Energy Standard, who the Hongkonger joined in the off-season, finished second to the Cali Condors in the match.

Haughey finished as the 10th highest points scorer in the match, with 38. Lilly King, who is yet to lose a race in the ISL, top scored with 87.5. Cali Condors swimmer King was also named MVP, earning US$10,000.

While the ISL continues with match two on Sunday and Monday, Energy Standard do not reappear until match five on November 2 and 3. The Paris-based team take on the Aqua Centurions, New York Breakers and Toronto Titans.
