Siobhan Haughey won the 200m freestyle as Energy Standard coasted into this weekend’s International Swimming League semi-finals in Budapest, setting an ISL and Asian short course record in the process. Hong Kong’s Olympic medal hope Haughey went into the race as favourite and did not disappoint. Her 1:51.19 finish is the fourth fastest in history – only teammate Sarah Sjostrom and Federica Pellegrini have swum faster – and brought the team 15 points. It beat her own Asia best of 1:51.42, set in the ISL on November 2. “I’m really happy with my swim today, especially as we’ve had so many meets before this,” Haughey said afterwards. “The coaches took me out of the 100m to keep me fresh for this and it worked.” Teammate Sarah Sjostrom won that 100m, among four individual wins and two relay firsts. She finished as Match MVP. Sjostrom and Chad Le Clos won the all-important 50m skins races to hammer home Energy Standard’s domination. ISL: Haughey misses out on 400m win but shines in 4x100m “Awesome, that was great,” Le Clos said after the skins. “I really wanted to win this race. It was a big honour for me, being the main event. “I changed my goggles to my lucky goggles after the second race. I wasn’t planning to change them till the final.” Tuesday’s concluding day of match nine of the ISL’s second season – all of which is taking place in the Hungarian capital as a measure to protect the swimmers from the coronavirus pandemic – saw last year’s champions dominate as they had on day one, having already qualified for the semis. The Paris-based team added another 10 wins on the second and final day of action to amass 573.5 points, well ahead of the Tokyo Frog Kings on 428 points and Team Iron on 415.5. The Toronto Titans languish in fourth on 289. Energy Standard return to the Duna Arena pool on Sunday for day one of the two-day semi-finals.
