With the city still cautiously handling its dozen-or-so daily new coronavirus cases, Hong Kong men’s and women’s Premiership organisers continued to ensure players and staff strictly adhered to Covid-19 protocol going into round two.

That by no means affected the level of rugby however, as teams were desperate to secure early success in their postponed and stunted seasons. After fiery openers to the Saxo Markets Men’s Premiership and KPMG Women’s Premiership 2020-21 seasons two weeks ago, this round was more about sharpening game plans as opposed to dusting off ring rust.

Reigning men’s champions Natixis Hong Kong Football Club predictably extended their lead and reinforced their ambitions to go for the season treble once again, while last season’s women’s league titlists, Societe Generale Valley Black Ladies, suffered a shock defeat, proving the once-faraway dominators are very much beatable.

In the men’s competition, DAC Kowloon held off a fearless Bloomberg Hong Kong Scottish to win 17-10, securing coach Scott Sneddon’s team their first win of the season. Despite the “conservative” performance, Kowloon finally have some momentum going into this weekend’s tasty clash against Football Club. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Scottish coach Craig Hammond will want to rally his boys after an impressive response to their “horror start”.

Football Club proved they are still firm league favourites after a 19-10 over Herbert Smith Freehills HKU Sandy Bay, with reliable fly-half Glyn Hughes running the show. HKU Sandy Bay remain optimistic given that they still have some major new signings to roll out in the coming weeks.
