All Hong Kong Premier League clubs can resume training on Wednesday, with competition likely to restart in two weeks’ time after they were given an exemption from the government’s social-distancing requirements.
The professional league has been suspended for more than two months due to the fourth wave of the pandemic and clubs have not been able to use training facilities after the government closed public venues, adhering to the two-person group gatherings rule in public areas introduced in early December.
There wasn’t all good news though. Two cup competitions had to be cancelled in order not to extend the season beyond schedule.

“The clubs are struggling for survival after being shut down from training and competition for such a long time and we are happy the government has finally listened to us and given us an exemption,” said Hong Kong Football Association chairman Pui Kwan-kay. “The clubs have agreed to start training for two weeks before returning to competition.

“But we may start the Sapling Cup first where the clubs can use more young players and once the team has regained their shape, we can start the league competition.”
Fans will not be allowed to attend, with matches to be played behind closed doors when the competition resumes in two weeks, according to Pui.
