International tournament cricket will return to Hong Kong for the first time since 2018 when the city hosts the Invitational Women’s T20 event in May next year.

FairBreak Global, the gender equality movement, said the tournament, from May 1-15, 2022, organised jointly with Cricket Hong Kong, will feature six franchise teams boasting top players from around the world.

Shaun Martyn, founder and managing director of FairBreak Global, said: “I cannot be prouder of the team at FairBreak and Cricket Hong Kong who have worked so diligently to bring this opportunity to the world.

“I’m excited for the players, particularly for associate nation players, and those who have lacked opportunity and recognition in this sport to date. We must always have an equal playing field that rewards talent and aspiration.”

The last major international tournament featuring big-name players to be held in Hong Kong was the 2018 T20 Blitz. The last edition of the popular, short-lived event boasted players such as Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, West Indies’ Darren Sammy, Dwayne Smith and Rahad Emrit and Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz, among others.

FairBreak said it would be the first privately funded tournament of its kind with health care group Gencor as the main sponsor.
