Track cyclist Sarah Lee set to win sixth ‘Best of the Best’ at delayed 2019 awards

  • Lee captures two gold medals at world championships, a result no other athlete could match in 2019
  • Eight sports stars of the year will also be announced, along with other awards at the delayed presentation

Track cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze is set to win her sixth “Best of the Best” sports award at a delayed presentation for 2019 in West Kowloon Cultural District on Saturday.

Lee, 33, won gold medals in the keirin and sprint at the 2019 world championships, a result that puts her above any other Hong Kong athlete. .

The Hong Kong Olympic Committee usually announces the annual award winners in early part of the following year but the pandemic has disrupted all facets of sport.

“We found it very difficult to stage a large-scale presentation in 2020, like we have done before and therefore have to change the format,” said awards organising committee chairman Vivian Lau Chiang-chu.

“This will be different from the standard online awards presentation. The ceremony will integrate XR technology, combining the virtual and physical world in announcing the awardees. Moreover, a theme of ‘The ARThletes’ will be used to promote display art pieces created jointly by local artists and athletes at the venue.”

Lau said there would not be any awards for 2020 as most of events came to a halt, while the 2021 awards may be combined with 2022.
