Kevin Leung Kai-fan’s headaches and sleepless nights started last weekend. He thought he might have caught something from his daughter, who had a mild cough. To be safe, he took a home Covid-19 test on the Monday, dismissing any possibility of a positive return because he received his second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in May. It was positive. Leung was shocked. He thought the lateral test he bought from a Liverpool pharmacy may be faulty, but then on Tuesday he lost his sense of smell. On Wednesday, he was unable to taste his food, and he knew he had the coronavirus. Hong Kong’s first and only professional darts player said he blamed himself for being complacent, suspecting he caught the coronavirus while training at a snooker and darts centre in Liverpool in preparation for the upcoming European Tour qualifiers. pic.twitter.com/tEZNbgBgww — Fatbeauty (@fatbeauty_leung) July 2, 2021 “It was quite unexpected because I was basically thinking after two jabs your defence against Covid-19 was strong,” Leung, 37, nicknamed “Fat Beauty” in Hong Kong, told the Post . “The last tournament I didn’t perform that well, so I went to the centre to practise for five or six days, six to eight hours a day, so I probably caught the virus there. “I was previously practising at home, but it’s not the same as practising in a proper venue, the kind of practice is different and the routine is different. Delta Variant has Dominated in the UK COVID cases rising. BUT hospitalizations are NOT rising Meaning vaccines work. Fear mongering doesn’t pic.twitter.com/gKfqAcLuY7 — Faheem Younus, MD (@FaheemYounus) June 27, 2021 Covid-19: positive test for fully vaccinated, UK-based Hong Kong darts player Kevin Leung Kai-fan “I will blame myself for this because I’ve always been very careful and defensive, trying not to go out. And with two jabs I never thought I would be infected. You’d see people who were vaccinated go out and now, even after two jabs, I got the virus.” The UK is experiencing a surge in infections with health officials blaming the highly contagious Delta variant for the rise. On Saturday, the country recorded more than 24,000 cases. Last week, the Hong Kong government banned flights from the UK. The US CDC says it takes a few weeks after vaccination for the body to build immunity against Covid-19 and it is possible for a fully vaccinated person to contract the virus during this time. In addition, studies suggest vaccines may not be able to prevent infection totally in some individuals but will significantly reduce the symptoms and enable recovery. Leung said his daughter and wife had tested negative for Covid-19 and he is now isolating himself from his family in his Liverpool home. He hopes to take a proper PCR test on Wednesday and is fearing he may have contracted the Delta variant. We have a NEW player with his own Ultimate Darts Card. The PCR test will have more details.” The former stockbroker is ranked 83rd in the Professional Darts Corporation’s (PDC) order of merit with £18,000 in earnings this season. He said he hoped a negative test will be enough for the PDC to clear him to play in the European qualifiers, which start on Friday in Coventry. He is vying to become one of 32 players to qualify for September’s European Tour. However, it also depends on how healthy he feels. “Even if I recover and feel better, I may still test positive because of residual levels of virus in the body,” said Leung. “But I need to recover first. I felt some stress in my chest and it is difficult to sleep because the oxygen level is low but today [Saturday], I seem to feel better.” He said the system in United Kingdom once a positive return is confirmed is to quarantine at home for 10 days before taking another test. Patients are encouraged to call an ambulance or visit the hospital if symptoms worsen. Leung is trying his best to maintain his card on the PDC Tour. In the last Super Series of four tournaments in June in Milton Keynes, he won just one match.
