Jhic Dacio, a domestic worker from the Philippines who has been in Hong Kong for 19 years, heads to the volleyball court on her one day off a week.

Dacio started the team Share Hong Kong in 2015 and they play in the domestic workers league, which is called Circle of Friends. She said the sport provides a host of benefits for her, both on and off the court, as well as bringing a sense of cohesion to the often overlooked foreign domestic workers.

“We want to promote unity and camaraderie for migrants,” said Dacio. “And we also want to use our one day off to boost our immune system and get our exercise, and to enjoy our day off.”

The team previously played in Victoria Park until the pandemic hit and closed down the area, and then renovations in Causeway Bay have now pushed the team to Cheung Sha Wan in the New Territories.

Funding for the team has been tough, said Dacio. They have been donated knee pads and two balls, and could use more help as it would encourage more domestic helpers to join and play.
