Former track cyclist Vivian Ma Wing-yu is looking forward to an exciting battle between Hong Kong’s experienced gold medal hope Sarah Lee Wai-sze and Germany’s powerful youngsters at the Tokyo Olympics track sprint events.

Ma, who partnered Lee when they won a team sprint silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games, will not be on the track in Tokyo but will still be watching closely as a television commentator and host for the Now TV Olympic channel.

“I have full confidence in Sarah, especially in her absolute speed, which is pivotal in sprinting events,” said Ma, who retired in 2019 at the young age of 21.

“She can have more options for attack in a one-on-one situation in the sprint and, coupled with her massive international exposure, it will be very difficult to beat her. She is so determined to do well in Tokyo and even if the Olympic Games have been pushed back a year, she is still a top favourite.

Ma said it would be dangerous to underestimate a German squad boasting youngsters such as Emma Hinze, who lifted all three sprinting gold medals at the 2020 world championships.
