Hong Kong rower Winne Hung’s Olympic dream stays alive with repechage chance

Hong Kong’s Olympic Games began in the rowing park on Friday morning where Winne Hung Wing-yan narrowly missed out on qualifying from her heat but moves on to the repechage for another chance.

The 22-year-old, making her Olympic debut just five years after moving from indoor to outdoor rowing, finished fourth of the five rowers in the third heat of the women’s single sculls at the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo Bay.

The Hong Kong Sports Institute athlete’s time of 8:17.79 was six seconds behind third-placed Veronica Toro Arana, of Puerto Rico.

The heat was won by this year’s World Rowing Cup II winner Hanna Prakatsen, who finished comfortably in front of China’s Jiang Yan by nearly five seconds.

Both of the first two rowers finished inside eight minutes, with the Russian Olympic Committee representative clocking 7:48.74.
