Hong Kong’s Michael Cheng Chun-leung finished eighth and Hayley Chan Hei-man 12th in their Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games’ men’s and women’s RS: X windsurfing races in a sweltering Enoshima on Sunday.

Cheng, who finished eighth overall at the 2016 Rio Games, finished third, eighth and eighth in his three races, tallying an overall 11 points after three of 12 races.

Meanwhile, London 2012 Olympian Chan is 12th overall – finishing 12th, eighth and 14th in her first trio of races – racking up 20 net points in relatively smooth sea and wind conditions.

“Michael performed really well,” said head coach Chan King-yin, who praised the team’s unparalleled access and research of Enoshima’s water and wind conditions in the lead-up.

“The first race wind conditions were small to medium speed, which really suits him as it was similar to the Rio winds. He kept up with the top speed in the first, and in the second and third races it changed a bit and it was more difficult to catch winds.”
