Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi-kem booked her place in the quarter-finals of the table tennis singles at the 2020 Olympics with a convincing 4-1 victory against Netherlands’ Britt Eerland inside the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
After a slow start, 24-year-old Doo settled into the match and in the end was too strong for the battling Dutchwoman, bamboozling the 27-year-old with an array of angled attacks and her aggressive style.
Doo’s reward for her dominant display is a quarter-final date with the world No 1 Chen Meng of China on Wednesday morning.

In making the quarters, Doo has already improved on her showing at the Rio Games in 2016 when she exited at the last-16 stage. She was eliminated by the top seed in the draw, Ding Ning of China, who went on to claim Olympic gold.
Doo and her mixed doubles partner Wong Chun-ting suffered a surprise early exit in the mixed doubles, where they were thought to have a chance at a medal. Doo was in tears after that loss and vowed to learn from her mistakes for the singles event.
