Olympic double silver medal-winning hero Siobhan Haughey has told Hongkongers she has seen the huge outpouring of support across the city for her momentous efforts in Japan, and that she is grateful for it.
The 23-year-old was speaking moments after receiving her second silver medal of the Tokyo 2020 Games, having just stunned world record-holder Sarah Sjostrom and defending Olympic champion Penny Oleksiak to take second place behind Australian sprint specialist Emma McKeon in the 100-metre freestyle final on Friday morning. Another Australian, Cate Campbell, finished third.

Haughey’s Asian record swim of 52.27 seconds, the third Asian record she has broken at the these Games, underscored a phenomenal Olympics for Haughey, so far. She is still to compete in the 50m freestyle event, with heats for that beginning later on Friday.

Her second medal in three days instantly made her the most-decorated Hong Kong Olympian of all time, and improved Hong Kong’s medal tally to three, after Cheung Ka-long’s sensational gold medal effort in the individual foil at the Makuhari Messe fencing hall on Monday.
